These cookies are a tradition at Christmas. The old hand written and typed recipes were sometimes titled 'Kolachi'. This was probably due to the filling being similar to traditional Eastern European Kolachi (often spelled kolach, kolá?e, or kolachi) a sweet yeast bread that is rolled with a dense, rich filling, usually made of ground walnuts, poppy seeds, or fruit.
Preparation
Bring oleo (butter) and cream cheese to room temperature, blend together. Gradually add flour. Mix by hand. Refrigerate.
Meanwhile mix filling ingredients well.
Assembly
Roll out dough. Cut into circles, then cut 4 slits in each circle.
Place a marble sized piece of filling in the center of each circle.
Fold every other corner into the center, press lightly to seal.
Roll each cookie in granulated sugar.
